Covid-19: beware, cascading class closings to be expected!

2021-03-29T18:37:59.499Z

A positive case among the students leads to the closure of their class, according to the new school health rules that came into force on this Monday.

A single student tested positive for Covid-19, the whole class closes.

Here is the new health protocol implemented this week, in schools in the 19 departments subject to reinforced restrictions, to stem the epidemic outbreak.

Expected result: cascading class closings!

If the Ministry of National Education indicates this Monday evening that it was "too early" to have a first assessment, teachers and directors are sounding the alarm.

As of Friday, 2,962 classes were closed, but mathematically, the number will explode.

"It is an infernal mechanism which multiplies the problems," judge Philippe Vincent, national secretary of Snpden, a union of heads of establishments.

There will be an increase in schools empty of students.

And it's the last watertight bulkhead that can be closed.

"

Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne, Hauts-de-France ... it closes with a vengeance.

Friday, National Education announced 21,000 students positive for the virus.

"Not all are in the 19 confined departments, but

at least

half: more than 10,000 classes to be closed according to the new rules", sums up - suspiciously - Philippe Vincent.

At the Eugène-Delacroix college in Drancy (Seine-Saint-Denis), 22 classes are closed and UDI deputy Jean-Christophe Lagarde called for the schools in the department to be closed.

In the Oise, at Corot de Beauvais college, five classes were closed on Monday.

In Hauts-de-France, classes closed at Annœullin college, Franklin college in Lille, Baudelaire high school in Roubaix ... says Jean-Yves Guéant, FCPE du Nord manager.

In the Val-de-Marne, the Eugène-Delacroix high schools in Maisons-Alfort and Guillaume-Apollinaire in Thiais, have closed classes, reports Myriam Menez, of the Peep.

To measure the chaos, the Snes-FSU, a union of secondary school teachers, set up an interactive map on Monday to count closures.

In high school, the difficult management of specialty lessons.

"What makes the protocol complex is that in high schools, the students are sometimes mixed in half-groups: there can be sixty contact cases ... for a single case of Covid", recalls Sophie Vénétitay, secretary- national Snes-FSU.

A puzzle.

The ministry confirms that if a high school student is positive, only their reference class will be closed.

For his specialty comrades, things get worse: if he has lunched with them, they are considered as contact cases, therefore isolated, but if he has just seen them in class, with a mask, nothing happens for them.

"He has more hours of lessons with his class than specialty courses," we justify at the ministry, where we rely on hybrid education to curb the spread.

The teachers, not the contact of the students.

If contact students are automatically excluded from school, not their teachers.

"They are only contact cases if they have had lunch with a positive teacher," says one at Blanquer.

There remains the question of their replacement in the event of their absence, recalls Guislaine David, national secretary of Snuipp-FSU, the first degree union. “We have great difficulty in finding staff to replace teachers at short notice.

In some municipalities, it is the municipal staff who come in reinforcement, but soon, it will also be necessary to replace the municipal staff!

His union issued a statement on Monday asking that the colleagues of an absent teacher no longer welcome his flock.

The parents' puzzle.

“My son's nursery school closed on Monday after a positive case.

I just got him back for a week of isolation, I don't know how I'm going to manage my job, especially since I had already stopped ten days because of Covid, then to keep my son isolated, ”sighs Claude, a dad from Hauts-de-Seine, contacted this Monday afternoon in full telecommuting against the backdrop of the Paw Patrol cartoon.

"There is concern, but especially incomprehension among parents," confirms Jean-Yves Guéant.

“A father told me that he was going to take his daughter out of school for a week because he no longer trusted the rules in force.

People become distrustful and annoyed at the government's decisions.

We have a feeling of going back in time.

See you in March 2020. "

Towards a strengthening of measures?

La Rue de Grenelle indicates that the effectiveness of the new measures must be verified before toughening up the tone.

Especially since no union is in favor of a dry closure of establishments.

“Parents are traumatized by the period of the first confinement and know very well that distance does not work.

If the adolescents find themselves at home, they will go to each other, the virus will spread further, ”recalls Myriam Menez.

All are calling for "means" to secure face-to-face reception.

However, a territorialized closure of schools is not to be ruled out - as in March 2020, when the schools in the Oise were closed a week before the rest of the country.

A solution of "last resort", we repeat in the entourage of Jean-Michel Blanquer.
