(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 29 - Sarah Obama, grandmother of former US president Barack Obama, died at the age of 99 in western Kenya, as her daughter Marsat Onyango reported today to the AFP agency.

Family spokesman Sheikh MusaIsmail said the woman had not been well for a week, but tested negative on the Covid-19 test, adding that the former US president "sent her condolences".

Sarah Obama, known as 'Mama Sarah', was a cometant woman until 2008, when her nephew Barack became the first black president of the United States.

Becoming a national celebrity after the Illinois exsenator Obama's visit to Kenya in 2006, Sarah Obama's modest farm became a tourist attraction with Obama's election to the presidency in November 2008. Sarah Obama was born in 1922 in a village on the coast. shores of Lake Victoria and was the third wife of Hussein Onyango Obama, the grandfather of BarackObama.

The latter, who died in 1975, seems to have been the first man to wear trousers in his village instead of goatskin.

The man participated in the British war in Burma and returned from the fighting with a gramophone and a photo of a white woman he claimed to have married.

Although there was no blood tie between the former president and the deceased, Obama always referred to her as a "grandmother," and on his trip to Kenya as president of the United States he met her with other members of his family in Nairobi.
