(ANSA) - NEW YORK, MARCH 29 - "Shtisel", the Israeli cult series set in the ultra-Orthodox world of Gerualemme, will have a stars and stripes remake signed by the creator of "Dexter" and "Insatiable" Lauren Gussis and directed by Kenneth Lonergan, the prize Oscar for "Manchester by the Sea".

"It will be a modern Romeo and Juliet story about an ultra-progressive 18-year-old on the verge of acquiring personal freedom and the ultra-Orthodox young man she is powerfully attracted to: so powerfully that she feels ready to undermine her life just to be with him" CBS studios that will produce the series together with Fremantle.

Lonergan was at the top of CBS's desires, but the studies were not there, as the director usually directs subjects of which he is also a screenwriter.

But the story of the new "Shtisel" has sparked a spark: after long conversations with Gussise with many rabbis, the Oscar winner has come on board for what will be his first television project.

Halfway between drama and comedy, the original series "Shtisel" returned last weekend for its third season on Netflix.

Created and directed by Ori Elon and produced by Dikla Barka for the Yes Oh channel, the saga of a Haredi family from the Geula district in Jerusalem has resonated far beyond the borders of Israel after being adopted in 2018 by the streaming colossus: a fate similar to that of the Canadian "Schitt's Creek" which has swept the latest Emmy and Golden Globe awards.

The third season kicks off six years after the first two.

Shooting the nine new episodes was not easy, not only because of Covid but also due to the complications of reuniting a cast that, thanks to the success of the previous episodes, each went his own way: "Everyone wanted to participate in the third season, but it was hard to get them back on set with the same kind of salary, "Dikla Barkai told the Times of Israel.
