Corona rapid tests are in great demand to find out at least in a snapshot whether one could be contagious.

An overview of where there are tests for at home.

Munich - Do a rapid corona test before visiting your grandparents or friends who belong to the risk group?

This has been going on for some time, and more frequent corona tests should also mean that the pandemic is better contained in the future.

In the meantime, 20 tests from different manufacturers have been approved by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices in Germany.

Most of them are stick tests, in which a nasal swab is carried out, and a spit test is also on the market.

Approvals for gargle and lollipop tests, some of which can be obtained in other countries, do not yet exist in this country.

The quick tests for personal use are available in pharmacies, supermarkets, discounters and drug stores as well as at the shipping giant Amazon.

However, the offers are in great demand and quickly sold out, so availability is very uncertain.

In summary, the tests are available from the following providers:

Supermarkets / discounters:

Bei

Aldi Nord and Süd have the test sets to buy again and again at the cash registers, Lidl started with a purely online offer and is probably planning to sell them in stationary stores soon.

Netto and Real also offered the tests in the online shop; in individual Edeka stores, the packs were available in the checkout area on request.

Rewe offered test kits online and in stores at the same time.

Drugstores:

Similar to the supermarkets and discounters, the online offers for tests are usually sold out in the drugstores, too, but you will occasionally find what you are looking for in the branches.

Both dm and Rossmann, Douglas and Müller offer the sets both stationary and online.

If you want to order a test on the Internet, you should make sure that the product is explicitly designed and certified for use by laypeople.

Many so-called antibody tests that work with blood are also offered online - however, these do not provide any information about an active infection with the virus, but can only show whether you have Covid-19 about 10 days after an infection.

Corona test for at home: What the self-test can - and what cannot

In fact, the self-tests, which are also called lay tests, are a good alternative to professional nasal swabs when used correctly, as a study by the Charité Berlin shows.

Anyone who carries out a rapid test or has it carried out must also be aware that the result is only a snapshot and not as precise as a PCR test.

A negative rapid test certainly lowers the risk of unknowingly infecting others without corona symptoms, but it does not provide complete security - the hygiene rules should still be observed.

Anyone who receives a positive rapid test result should urgently be tested again with the PCR method, according to the Federal Ministry of Health, they are even entitled to it.

Corona self-test: this is how it works

The antigen test for at home shows whether there are protein fragments of the coronavirus in the nasal swab taken, the PCR variant, carried out with medical staff and subsequent detailed laboratory analysis, can prove the genetic makeup of the virus.

Self-tests, the results of which are usually available after 15 minutes, are relatively simple: Similar to a pregnancy test, markings on the test strip indicate whether the corresponding proteins have been found or not, i.e. the patient is positive or negative for Covid-19 .

Corona tests for personal use: A sought-after good - these are the alternatives to the test at home

Anyone who can no longer get a self-test at the aforementioned sales outlets can also have a quick test carried out in test centers, doctor's offices or pharmacies.

Since March 8, everyone has been entitled to a free Corona rapid test per week - but be careful when making an appointment, there are also centers run by private providers who charge a fee for testing.

In addition to the public options for testing, more and more systematic tests are being introduced in schools, daycare centers and companies.
