Emmanuel Macron's announcements: "It's going in the right direction, but ..."

Rémi Salomon, "representative" of the doctors of the Public Assistance-Hospitals of Paris (AP-HP) would have liked more decisions on telework

Rémi Salomon does not like to cry wolf.

But the professor had a presentiment of it: without generalized confinement, it would not pass.

So, this Thursday evening the representative of the doctors of the Hospitals of Paris hesitates between relief at the announcements of Emmanuel Macron and fear that they are not strong enough.

He calls on the French to mobilize in a "last collective effort".

Extend the restrictions to the whole of France, close schools for three weeks… good measures?

.

This is going in the right direction.

Closing schools is difficult but necessary because they are a place of contamination.

What bothers me is the rest: too little restriction on outings, little risk prevention during family gatherings and nothing on how telework is made systematic.

From a medical point of view, I am not sure that this is enough to stop the epidemic.

The closure of classes does not worry the pediatrician that you are?

Yes, because we see kids in great pain every day.

But a brake was needed and the one chosen seems suitable to me: the closing time, especially for the little ones, is limited to three weeks, including holidays.

They will not be away from schools for too long.

But I regret that the vaccination of teachers was not announced.

Going from 7,000 to 10,000 intensive care beds, is it feasible?

10,000 I don't know if it's possible because it involves a lot of deprogramming, but increasing the capacities is what we are doing and will do.

The caregivers are all mobilized.

Training courses for students and retirees have already been launched.

We will fulfill our mission to the end.

Concretely, what is the situation in your hospitals?

More than 1,500 critical care beds are occupied in Ile-de-France.

It is less than during the first wave but more than the second.

We are therefore not at saturation point, but we could be there quite quickly without crushing the dynamics of the epidemic.

Especially since this time, we do not benefit from external reinforcements and very little from medical evacuations.

In addition, you should know that there is at least two weeks of delay between the announcement of measures and their effect on hospitalizations.

With a risk of "sorting" patients?

Massive deprogramming of care is already a form of prioritization.

And the more the number of places is limited, the less the support is optimal.

I do not like the word “sorting” which implies that we are abandoning patients - this is not the case - but yes, we may have to prioritize entries into intensive care.

Caregivers cannot be alone in making these choices, there needs to be an ethical and national debate.

To not get there, we need a last collective effort.

The situation is hard for all French people, I myself have two children whose professional projects are at a standstill.

But this is the last push to give.

In a few weeks, the pressure will drop, let's put all our energy into making it work.
