In 2016, 12,821 students had enrolled in the careers of the Faculty of Medicine at the CBC of the UBA.
This year, in the middle of the pandemic, there
were 20,137
.
The growth was
more than 57% in the last 6 years
and this year, for the first time, the new young people who aspire to be doctors
break the barrier of 20,000
at the University of Buenos Aires.
From the UBA they believe that the pandemic cannot be directly linked to this growth because, in fact,
the trend has been going on for years
.
However, it cannot be ruled out that the health situation -which lasts longer than expected-
may have influenced
the decision of young people who have to choose their career and their future life project.

“It is very difficult to know how the pandemic impacts, but the truth is that we have a
sustained increase in enrollment
and, without a doubt,
medical sciences have been revalued in this context
.
To the specifics of our tasks, we must add the enormous commitment shown by the students.
More than 7,000 boys and girls fulfill tasks as volunteers in different programs that have to do with the pandemic (vaccination, Plan Detectar, among others), "
Javier Andes, Undersecretary General of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the UBA
, told

Although it is not a historical record,
the number of registered at the CBC continues to grow in recent years.
Despite the fact that all the classes of the Common Basic Cycle went virtual, and are still taught remotely because they are all theoretical,
this year 66,651 students enrolled in
the first cycle of the UBA.
They were
5.6% more than last year
.
This year was the first in which students can enroll in two shifts at the CBC: at the beginning of the year and then in the middle of the year.
So, the number of students could become a record, but later.

To advance their careers and as volunteers, many medical seniors participated in the program.

Classes will start on Monday at the CBC
of the UBA and the students will amount, strictly speaking,
more than 100,000.
Because the more than 66,000 new ones are added to the more than 40,000 who are still taking subjects from last year.
For Felipe Vega Terra, deputy director of the CBC, the growth of those enrolled in Medicine is due to the fact that it accompanies the general growth of the CBC, that is, of students who choose the UBA as a university. For years, hard work has been done to
help students who leave the intermediate level
so that they can adapt to what it means to study at the university.
Let us remember that, about 5 years ago, scientific text comprehension courses were started so that students who came from high school could approach them correctly.
“We have different support programs.
The last one we launched was "Enlace UBA", an open access and self-administered portal for students to learn about content and what the study dynamics are like at the higher level.
Also, "The preview of the UBA", where advanced university students offer tutorials to those who are about to enter and do not know much about university life, "says Vega Terra.
For Andes, “the sustained increase in Medicine is due to several factors, including the prestige of the UBA in general and the recognized quality of teaching in particular of
traditional careers in the health area
, since not only this increase it is seen in a particular career of the faculty if not that the increase is sustained in the majority of the degrees that are dictated in this house of studies ”.
More Hard Sciences and Psychology, less Social
Registered data leaves other data to be taken into account.
On the one hand, the
sustained growth of the Faculty of Psychology,
which went from 5,291 students enrolled in 2016 to 8,078 this year.
Only in the last year, and now in the middle of the pandemic,
the growth was 16%: from 6,974 to 8,078
new students.

Hard careers
, such as
Engineering and Exact Sciences, have
also been
growing a lot
.
The latter grew 20.5% in the last year.
Here, some believe that it is, in large part, due to the new career in Data Sciences (which includes everything from algorithms to Big Data and promises a successful insertion in the labor market) that brought in 450 new students, and somehow explains the growth of all Exact Sciences.
Those that are
falling steadily are Social Sciences majors
, which seem to be going through a major crisis.
In the last year they fell 7.3%, but it was more than 15% in the last 6 years.
