A painting by the Franco-American artist JonOne, exhibited in South Korea, was vandalized "by mistake" by two young people, who claimed to

A young couple thought they were leaving their mark on a participatory painting, but in fact vandalized a work of art estimated at $ 500,000.

The scene took place in an art gallery in Seoul, South Korea, where “Untitled”, a painting by Franco-American artist JonOne, painted in 2016, is exhibited. The gallery's surveillance cameras show the two young people spread green acrylic paint using brushes placed at the foot of the canvas.

The paint cans, like the brushes, were actually part of the installation.

"Our team noticed that someone had damaged the canvas, so I arrived immediately," the exhibition manager told Reuters.

Police then quickly tracked down the couple.

“They confessed that they thought they were allowed to paint on the canvas, as a participatory work of art.

They admitted to having made a mistake.

Kang Wook, the exhibition manager, said he was in contact with the artist "to decide what to do".

The gallery has since installed a security cordon and a “do not touch” sign to avoid any further misunderstanding.
