(ANSA) - ROME, APRIL 04 - A strong signal of European support for the national reconciliation process and the new government of national unity was brought to Libya today by the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, who - according to sources of the EU - in a visit in Tripoli he met with the premier of the national unity government (GNU), Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, the new president of the presidential council, Mohamed Yunisal Menfi, and the Libyan foreign minister, Najla Al Mangoush.

Michel, the sources say, has announced that the European Union embassy will return permanently to Tripoli starting at the end of April.

In the first official visit of an EU leader since the formation of the national unity government, Michel promised that Europe will step up its commitment to Libya on the front of economic reconstruction, after a decade of conflict, and contribute to governance, stability, respect for human rights and security in Libya.

As the only precondition - EU sources still know - Michel asked that foreign fighters leave Libya, defining compliance with the ceasefire and the arms embargo as crucial for peace.

In recent days, Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio has made a visit to Tripoli and in April there will be that of Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

Also scheduled is the visit of the Greek premier, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

France opened its embassy in Tripoli last month.
