“Three of us, on two dives, examined the ship and paid tribute to its brave crew,” tweeted Victor Vescovo, founder of Texas-based Caladan Oceanic, who piloted the submersible that reached the wreck. Two turrets, torpedo storage locations and plenty of gun carriages were still there, according to the expedition. The crew filmed, photographed and surveyed the wreck off the coast of Samar Island. Sonar data, images and field notes collected during the dives will be turned over to the US Navy, Vescovo said.
