(ANSA) - ROME, APRIL 06 - In Liberia, women have launched the Lappa Revolution campaign to lead men to correct gender imbalances in the country's power structures.
Over 50 percent of the national population is female, as in most of the African continent, but women are a minority in politics and other spheres of leadership.
The nation had a woman, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, as president, but activists say more needs to be done.
"We in Liberia don't have institutions that give us the basic services we need," MacDella Cooper told the BBC, adding that Lappa Revolution wants to increase women's representation in Parliament.
"In 2021, we still have a very high maternal mortality rate. Due to the lack of representation, problems affecting the lives of women could easily be solved by functioning government agencies that are not helping us," she added.
Cooper said sexual violence and rape in Liberia have increased, but laws aimed at protecting women are not enforced.
