Migrants: clashes in the Tenerife field, 8 arrests and injured

(ANSA) - MADRID, APRIL 06 - At least eight people were arrested by the Spanish police and several were injured after scuffles broke out between migrants in the provisional field Las Raíces in Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands: they are reported by the Iberian media, citing sources from the delegation of the Government in the archipelago and NGOs present on the site.

According to Spanish public television (RTVE), at least 15 people were in need of health care.

    The clashes started last night and then resumed in the morning.

During their intervention, the police fired rubber bullets.

    The Spanish press explains that hundreds of migrants recently disembarked in the Canary Islands live in the Las Raícesc tent city.

According to the Migrant Support Assembly on the island, the people accommodated there live in "unsustainable conditions" and "can't take it anymore".

Many of the people who arrive on the archipelago get stuck there and are unable to continue their journey.

More than 150 have already asked to return to their home countries, according to the International Organization for Migration.

    Meanwhile, the landings continue: today a boat with 30 people was rescued near Fuerteventura and another one that is still in the open sea is needed, according to an alert received from the emergency services.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, more than 1,000 arrivals were recorded in the Canary Islands in March, a number in strong growth compared to February, when there were less than 300. (ANSA).
