Unprecedented crisis in the pandemic for the legal gaming sector, the backbone of our country's finances (11.4 billion to the tax authorities in 2019 against an estimated revenue of 6.7 billion euros in 2020, with a decrease of 41%) .
Following the closure of the physical points - according to a research by the Luiss Business School - there was a significant drop in the presence of gaming (-41%).
Before the economic-health emergency, the legal gaming industry, in fact, had an expenditure value of 19.4 billion euros (2019 data) which in 2020 was reduced by as much as 33%.
At the same time, there is
a natural increase in online use but also in illegal channels

For these reasons, Luiss Business School and Ipsos will jointly analyze the evolution of the world of legal gaming with a research project on the gaming sector (within the observatory on regulated markets), with the aim of providing scientific support to public decision makers. , to public gaming concessionary companies, to operators in the supply chain, to civil society stakeholders, also making use of the support of the Customs and Monopolies Agency.
The first estimates of the research lead to fears that the increase in the illegal market could have involved up to 4 million players, not all fully aware of this choice.
"To safeguard an essential market for our economy - an instrument to combat illegal and tax evasion phenomena - it is necessary to update the regulation of legal gaming, making it more functional in contrasting potential risks for users", comments Raffaele Oriani, Full Professor of Corporate Finance of the Luiss University.
