Tropea is a "village of villages", out of competition

In the end, the "Pearl of the Tyrrhenian" made it: it defeated the fierce competition of other candidates scattered throughout the boot by winning the national competition "Il borgo dei borghi". (HANDLE)

TROPEA - And Tropea returns to dreaming, also hoping to chase away the shadows and the heavy anguish of the pandemic from Covid 19. A few months after the disappointment for the burning elimination from the race for the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2022, the "Pearl of the Tyrrhenian" gets back on track, savoring the full taste of victory thanks to the success in the "Borgo dei borghi" course awarded every year by Rai3. Sea, sun, art, culture, architecture, gastronomy, hospitality: there is not a single aspect of the tourist offer in the broad sense that, in this bright corner of the "Costa degli dei", cradle of tourism in Calabria, does not represent an opportunity to reaffirm its irresistible and timeless charm. It is truly an opportunity to immerse yourself in history, a visit to the village perched on the cliff opposite the suggestive church of Santa Maria dell'Isola, reachable by an ancient staircase carved into the rock. History and legend here animate tuff and stones and intertwine, capturing the attention among the tangle of alleys and lanes: it is said, in fact, that it was Hercules who built Tropea, returning from the Columns. However, what has always been striking is the set of buildings that overlook the promontory and make it a natural terrace overlooking the sea capable of offering breathtaking views, with a view that can also reach the Aeolian Islands, in all hours of the day and, in particular, at sunset. Jewel within a jewel is the historic center dotted with its churches. And then the many places full of history between noble buildings and portals. In Calabria and beyond, however, Tropea is and remains, for a large part of the year, as confirmed by presences from northern Europe, synonymous with holidays: to support what is the symbolic image of the town are beaches such as the Rotonda, that del Cannone, dell'Occhiale and della Linguata which, with its white sand, opens up to a mirror of sea with never-forgotten colors. An episode, then, cannot miss the cave called del Palombaro. But in Tropea there is also so much to see by discovering the artistic and cultural heritage that ranges from the arts to the letters, from philosophy (Pasquale Galluppi was born there) who was among those who introduced the study of European and above all Kantian philosophy to Italy or to savor following the itineraries of gastronomy. A nod to the gastronomic and universally celebrated symbol of the city: the red onion, a specialty that enriches and characterizes a basket of treasures such as' nduja from nearby Spilinga, pecorino from Monte Poro and much, much more.
