Vaccination: government maintains targets despite delays in delivery from Pfizer

2021-04-06T14:16:52.522Z

The American laboratory will "smooth" its deliveries for the second quarter and postpone part of the doses expected in April and May to December.

Do not speak of "delay", rather of "smoothing".

Sometimes offensive with AstraZeneca, the organizers of the French vaccination campaign against Covid-19 are careful not to any derogatory remarks against Pfizer-BioNTech, the main supplier.

This Tuesday, the Ministry of Health and that of the Economy, however, confirmed delays in the delivery of the product to messenger RNA from the American firm and its German partner.

“We had a point last week to talk about projections and there will be a smoothing compared to what was modeled, explains the Ministry of the Economy.

Three million doses will be delivered on June 1 and 3, which explains why 3 million doses planned for May switch to this month, but we should not make a fuss.

If this same operation had taken place in the middle of the month, it would have been neutral.

"The delays of Pfizer-BioNTech should be made up in June, since the same source indicates that" this does not call into question the commitment on the quarter, which will be largely fulfilled.

A total of 31.2 million doses of this serum are expected over this period.

Staggered vaccinodrome openings

All laboratories combined, while France was counting on 12.2 million doses received in April and 17.7 million in May, the Ministry of the Economy now mentions "12 million doses in April and a little less than 15 million in may ".

These logistical constraints are cutting back on the margins calculated by the authorities to arrive at the figures notably announced by Emmanuel Macron.

"We are going to meet the target of 10 million first-time injections in mid-April," announces the Ministry of Health.

We have no doubts about our ability to do so.

The drop in projections for Pfizer does not undermine our target, although it does make it more strained.

We should reach 20 million first-time injectors in mid-May and 30 million in mid-June.

"

To do this, the government plans 2 million injections (first and second combined) per week for the current month and the next, and 3 million from June.

Delays in delivery, to use official terminology, will still cause delays in the opening of certain vaccinodromes.

“These large capacity centers (minimum 1000 injections per day) will open very gradually on the territory, according to the needs of each territory, we detail avenue de Ségur.

The strategy is to boost what already exists in a territory, and when it becomes opportune to create a center of great capacity.

Yes, some of the centers that should have opened at the beginning of April will not be open until the end of April.

The first deliveries of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are expected this month, but they could be reserved for the overseas departments and the most precarious and difficult to locate people, due to its injection in a single dose.

While the weekend was marked by hiccups about the AstraZeneca vaccine, which has not found a taker in vaccination centers in northern France, the Ministry of Health is reassuring: "We can not really talk about distrust of AstraZeneca.

Health professionals evoke a desire to have more and more doses to vaccinate people in waiting.

There are contradictory elements, but positive signals in the city for this vaccine to find its audience.

The extension of vaccination to over 70s without comorbidity ten days ago is a success, since 40% of 70 to 74 year olds have already received a first injection.
