Nutella substitute from the former GDR: Hazelnut spread competes with Ferrero cream

Nutella is on almost every kitchen shelf in Germany.

But Nudossi, the nut nougat cream from the new federal states, is catching up - thanks to a certain ingredient.

Radebeul - For years, not only children have liked to smear the sweet Nutella cream on their bread, but adults too.

In large supermarket chains such as Edeka *, Real or Rewe *, other brands can be found in addition to the spread - such as Nudossi, the "Nutella from the East".

The product has become more and more popular, especially recently.

Nudossi instead of Nutella - the Ferrero product was difficult to find in the GDR

During the GDR era in the 1970s and 1980s, the real Nutella was hard to come by; citizens could only buy the West product for dearly money in Intershop stores.

That is why many turned to the cheaper nudossi.

The cream was not only easier to find, but also free of artificial additives and palm oil, as the Handelsblatt reports.

Because in the GDR the two ingredients were hardly available.

This is why manufacturers used hazelnuts - one reason why nudossi is still so popular today.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nudossi production was discontinued - now there are spreads at Edeka, Rewe and Real

It is pure coincidence that the nut and nougat cream from the East is still around.

Because for a few years production was completely stopped.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nudossi was forgotten more and more - in 1990 all employees were terminated and the Nudossi manufacturing plants were closed.

The popular Ost products were replaced on the shelves by Nutella jars - until Karl-Heinz Hartmann decided to restart production.

At a press conference in November 1997, Hartmann decided to revive the brand without further ado.

In the same year, the entrepreneur bought the Elbflorenz confectionery factory in Radebeul - he actually wanted to make Christmas cookies there.

But when a journalist asked whether he would restart production in the factory where nudossi was previously made, he probably answered unplanned with "yes".

Word quickly got around about the resumption of production.

Hartmann and his company "Sächsische und Dresdner Back- und Süßwaren" have been producing the former cult product Nudossi since 1998 - and successfully selling the nut cream throughout Germany.

Also at Edeka, Rewe and Real: Nutella is facing competition again - Nudossi among the top 100 in 2020

In 2020 the “Lebensmittelzeitung” named Nudossi among the 100 top brands.

These stand out due to their sales growth, market share gains and buyer reach.

The product generated almost 12.5 million euros last year.

The recipe for success: the high proportion of hazelnuts.

Now that the Germans have become more aware of the issues of climate and the environment, the popularity of the product has also increased.

"Greta Thunberg is our most important brand ambassador," jokes boss Hartmann.

A nut nougat cream recipe to make yourself:

Nudossi uses hazelnuts and sunflower oil for the ingredients - in contrast to Nutella.

The Ferrero product not only contains the flavoring vanillin, but also palm oil.

However, this harms the environment, as climate and animal rights activists criticize again and again.

The fat used is also often frowned upon by consumers.

However, the company declares that it only uses certified and sustainable palm oil.

Not only Nudossi is competing with Nutella, Milka has also launched a new hazelnut spread on the market.
