(ANSA) - ROME, APRIL 08 - India recorded a record of 126,789 new cases of Covid this morning while several states are struggling to contain a second wave of infections, complaining of vaccine shortages and asking for doses to be extended to young people.
This was reported by various Indian media.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the second anti-Covid dose (the first was on March 1).
"Vaccination is one of the few ways we have to defeat the virus. If you are eligible for the vaccine, fallopresto," Modi tweeted.
On Monday, daily infections in the country had exceeded 100,000 cases for the first time and today exceeded that limit three times, the largest daily increase recorded in the world.
The peak, much faster than the first wave of last year, took authorities by surprise.
The government pointed to the gatherings and reluctance to wear masks after the reopening of shops and offices.
With 12.9 million cases, India is the third country most affected by the pandemic, after the United States and Brazil.
New Zealand has suspended entry for all travelers from India, including its citizens, for approximately two weeks.
