Covid-19: people under 50 with cystic fibrosis can now be vaccinated

People under the age of 50 with cystic fibrosis are now eligible for vaccination against the coronavirus - which was not the case until now - reported this Thursday a patient association, letter from the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, in support.

These patients can now receive doses of the Pfizer vaccines - for those over 16 - and Moderna, for those over 18, can we read on the Vaincre la Cucoviscidose site.

"Patients with cystic fibrosis under the age of 50 can now be vaccinated," wrote Olivier Véran, in a letter dated March 31, addressed to this organization which has been fighting this disease since 1965.

"It is a relief", declared in a press release the association Vaincre la Mucoviscidose, which had asked the government last February "to ensure effective and immediate access" to vaccination for the patients it represents.

In this letter, she wrote that this disease "affects approximately 7,500 patients whose average age at death is 34 years", detailing that according to "the recent EPI-PHARE study published on February 18 from data from the SNDS (National Health Data System, Editor's note) indicates that cystic fibrosis presents a four times higher risk of hospitalization in the face of Covid ”.

The case of certain exceptional situations

Until then, cystic fibrosis was one of the “comorbidities” giving access to vaccination for people aged 50 to 69 years.

For the youngest patients, "certain exceptional situations could lead to prescriptions without marketing authorization", as in the case of lung transplants for example, added the organization.

During his last televised address, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, unveiled the rest of the vaccination schedule: from April 16 for French people who do not have "comordibities" aged 60 to 69, from May 15 for 50-59 year olds and finally in mid-June for any adult wishing to be vaccinated.
