The required medical masks often result in additional costs for consumers in the corona pandemic.
Can they be deducted from tax?
Medical expenses
are considered
extraordinary expenses
and reduce a certain amount the tax burden *, the Taxpayers Association says.
These include, for example,
expenses for dentures, glasses, cures or orthopedic aids
, according to a report by the German Press Agency (dpa) on the subject.

According to the report,
medical masks
bought
because of the
corona pandemic
can also be claimed - but it's not that simple.
A distinction must be made here: If the masks were bought for
private use
, the costs are among the
extraordinary burdens
, according to the report.
If the masks were bought
exclusively for professional reasons
, they were
advertising costs
or
business expenses
.

Deducting taxes in the home office - possible or not?
In order for
extraordinary burdens to have a tax-reducing
effect, the so-called
reasonable
own
burden
must be
exceeded.
And that in turn is different and depends on income, marital status and the number of children.
The dpa report gives an example: For a married couple with two children and a total income of 40,000 euros, the reasonable personal burden would be 1,046 euros.
Only expenses that were higher would be taken into account for tax purposes.
