Pims syndrome: Corona attacks children's hearts - without parents noticing the infection

A study shows that children after a corona infection can develop the so-called Pims syndrome, which among other things restricts the heart function.

PIms is the abbreviation for the term "Pediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome".

This means violent inflammatory reactions in various organs such as the heart and skin.

These overreactions are triggered by a misdirected immune system.

American researchers had found that children who have had mild corona infections are particularly at risk.

The scientists analyzed the health data of 1,733 children and adolescents with Pims syndrome (also known as "Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children", MIS-C for short).

It turned out

that the children and adolescents fell ill about two to five weeks after a corona infection.

"We assume that most illnesses result from an asymptomatic or mild Covid-19 illness," quotes Der Spiegel, the team led by Ermias Belay from the Covid-19 Response Team of the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) .

According to the study, 90 percent of the children affected suffered from complaints that affected at least four organs.

It was noticeable that it was mainly the heart that was damaged

: the researchers report on Pims patients with inflammation of the myocardium and disorders of the heart function, which restricted its pumping capacity.

According to the German Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, the skin, gastrointestinal tract, mucous membranes, lungs, mouth and throat can also be affected by the inflammatory reactions - with fatal consequences if no therapy is used.

More than half of the Pims patients had to be treated in the intensive care unit

The US researchers were able to identify gastrointestinal symptoms, rashes and red eyes in up to 67 percent of Pims patients.

Around 54 percent of the patients had low blood pressure values up to shock and around 58 percent had to be treated in an intensive care unit as a result of pims, according to the study results.

Cardiac dysfunction was found in 484 patients (31.0%), pericardial effusion in 365 (23.4%), myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) in 300 (17.3%) and coronary artery dilatation or aneurysm in 258 (16.5%), ”said the researchers.

Patients between the ages of zero and four would be the least likely to be affected by severe disease.

In contrast, patients between the ages of 18 and 20 were more likely to suffer from myocarditis, pneumonia and acute shortness of breath.

In this group, patients also frequently reported corona symptoms that preceded Pims.

Children, on the other hand, more often show a corona course without symptoms

.

Asymptomatic children were around eight years old on average.

According to the researchers, one explanation could be that this age group does not comment on their complaints as often.

In Germany, the German Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases (DGPI) is currently aware of 260 Pims cases in children and adolescents, as reported by Spiegel.

Children with pims are mostly older and more male, it continues

.

Treatment of Pims Syndrome

If Pims syndrome is treated early and with the right medicines, the symptoms usually subside without consequences.

Cortisone preparations are used to curb the inflammatory reaction.

Treatment with preparations made from donor blood plasma are also possible, as are antibiotics against bacterial infections that the children also contract.
