A Greek blogger and journalist was shot dead outside his home in Athens on Friday afternoon.

Giorgos Karaivaz, known in Greece as a police reporter, was shot seven times, the Greek media reported, citing police circles.

Two men then fled on a motorcycle, it said.

At the crime scene in the Athens district of Alimos, at least 17 cartridge cases were found, reported the daily newspaper »Kathimerini«.

However, neighbors did not hear anything, which is why the police assume that the murder weapon was a pistol with a silencer.

Karaivaz is said to have been on the way home from a midday boulevard broadcast in which he reported as a police reporter.

Karaivaz reportedly leaves a wife and child behind.

The background to the fact is unclear

The possible backgrounds will be used for gadgets.

The case in Greece is reminiscent of that of the journalist Sokratis Giolias, who was murdered eleven years ago and who - also in front of his house - was shot 16 times.

At that time, a left-wing extremist terrorist organization had taken responsibility for the attack.

Most recently, in July, a hooded man shot the owner of a tabloid, Stefanos Chios, in the neck and chest in front of his house.

He survived the attack, the case is still under investigation.

The Vice President of the EU Commission responsible for values and transparency, Věra Jourová, reacted with concern.

She was deeply shocked, wrote the Czech on Twitter.

Your thoughts are with Karaivaz's family and colleagues.

Justice needs to be ensured and the safety of journalists guaranteed.
