"His Majesty passed away this morning in peace at Windsor Palace. Further announcements will be made later. The royal family joins people around the world and mourns his passing."
Philip's life spanned some hundred years of European history and he headed hundreds of charities, set up programs to promote activities among schoolchildren and played a key role in raising children.
Over the course of his life, Philip's image has changed from that of a handsome and energetic athlete to that of an arrogant, stubborn and insensitive person.
And yet, the life of the Duke of Edinburgh was not boring, let alone colorful and full of scandals.

Philip, as quite a few of his associates and knowledgeable sources have argued, has always felt like someone who lived in the Queen's shadow and one who was not taken seriously, this may be why he sought his appreciation from different and young women.
The name of the knotted prince is often associated with the names of young, beautiful and aristocratic women.
In one of the interviews, Philip was asked to give his response to the rumors and said: "How can I cheat? There has been a detective close to me day and night since 1947."
