Prince Philip, 99-year-old consort of Queen Elizabeth, recently discharged after a few weeks in hospital in London due to an unspecified infection - not linked to Covid - to which heart problems had been added, died.

This was announced by the queen in a note released by Buckingham in which the sovereign expresses "deep sadness" for the loss of "her beloved husband".

A stainless landmark of the British court for decades, the Duke of Edinburgh celebrated 73 years of marriage to nearly 95-year-old Elizabeth II in November.

He would have turned 100 in June.
