Learner drivers who took their practical test in an automatic car were previously not allowed to drive a manual car - that is now changing.

Berlin - Shifting needs to be learned: Anyone who has learned to drive a car with a manual transmission is likely to recognize the initial death of the engine when starting up, as well as the protesting yowling of the vehicle if you accidentally shift into the wrong gear.

Over time, learner drivers develop a feeling for gear shifting during practical lessons - unless they complete their training and test in a car with an automatic transmission.

Anyone who saved themselves the manual shifting experience on the way to their driver's license and also passed their test in an automatic car was not allowed to drive a car with a manual transmission without additional training.

Combined driver's license from April: Automatic and gearshift training in one - that's how it works

For the first of April this year, however, there is now a combination option of both systems: Driver training that takes place predominantly with automatic transmission, but includes teaching units and a final inspection drive with manual transmission.

With the successfully passed practical test, cars of both vehicle types can then be driven.

The cancellation of the automatic binding is only possible for people who do not use the system for medical reasons.

Combined driving license: That is the content of the training

In addition to the normal course of driver training with theoretical and practical lessons, the combination driver's license includes an extra regulation that stipulates the lessons with manual transmission.

"The prerequisite is training in a driving school of at least 10 hours (45 minutes each) as well as a 15-minute test drive in which the respective applicant must prove that he is qualified to drive a class B motor vehicle in a safe, responsible and environmentally conscious manner “Says the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.

The remaining driving lessons and, above all, the practical test can then take place in an automatic car.

Combined driving license: That should bring the new possibility

The responsible federal ministry mentions a special aspect that the new option wants to address: "With this regulation, we are making traffic safer and more sustainable by increasing the attractiveness of vehicles with alternative drives and highly automated driving functions for learner drivers and thus also the Use of such vehicles in driving schools is promoted ”.

In fact, electric cars and hybrid models in particular are increasingly being equipped with automatic transmissions only, and with the combination control they could now be used more frequently in driving schools.

Overall, the new regulation should also benefit the learner drivers: They can make their first attempts in road traffic without having to pay close attention to the gear shift.

If you are already familiar with the overall situation, an introduction to manual shifting follows - and shifting errors, which may be due to stress, can no longer get in the way in the test situation.

Overall, the situation of driving schools in the corona pandemic is quite different across Germany - sometimes the lessons take place with FFP2 masks.
