Angela Merkel is in favor of a new turn of the screw in the restrictions to stem this third wave of the epidemic.

The total number of infections in Germany has just reached and even slightly exceeded the threshold of three million cases of infections (3,011 million precisely) since the start of the pandemic, or 13,245 more than the day before.

From now on, the national incidence rate over the last 7 days, particularly monitored by the authorities, stands at 136.4 per 100,000 inhabitants, ie above the threshold triggering in principle a tightening of restrictions.

In this context, Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke again over the weekend, during a meeting of deputies from her conservative party, in favor of a strict form of national reconfinement for a fairly short period.

The goal is to try to stem the third wave of the pandemic in the country, which continues to swell, despite the movement restrictions already in place.

In addition, his government plans to toughen national anti-Covid legislation on Tuesday in order to be able to impose “lockdowns” on the country as a whole, including the imposition of night curfews, even if it means overriding resistance at the local level. or regional.

This amendment to the legislation would break a taboo in Germany where federalism grants important prerogatives to regions in the area of health.

It remains to be seen whether Angela Merkel, who has been defending a firm line on restrictions for months, will be able to impose this measure when she recently had to give up a little ballast in the face of the discontent of part of the public and regional states.
