Now is the time.

Winter is officially over, but its remains can still be seen in a few water sources that are still full, probably after the light rains that fell over the weekend.

One of the places that is full these days is the winter pool, restored in the Circassian village of Rihaniya, in the Upper Galilee.

The pool is located on Road 886, close to the localities of Alma, Kerem Ben Zimra and Dalton.

The village of Rihaniya was founded in 1873, but it was not until 1880 that Circassian families from the Abzah tribe from the North Caucasus came to it.

The settlement of the Abzah tribe is accompanied by a legend about three horsemen who set out in search of a place of settlement that would suit them.

The cavalry arrived in the area and were impressed by the land and the pool of water and the nearby spring and decided to settle on the spot, after receiving the blessing of the authorities.

The village was built in a rectangular shape, surrounded by a wall and gates, which were locked at night and the origin of the name is in the myrtle plants (basil in Arabic), which grew near the well on the site.

Four species of amphibians

In the past year, the wonderful winter pool located on the outskirts of the village has been restored, at the initiative of the Kinneret Drainage and Streams Authority, in collaboration with the Merom Hagalil Regional Council, the Nature and Parks Authority, funded by the Open Space Fund and planning environmental projects.

The winter pool is located in the northwestern part of the town of Rihaniya, in an area of about seven and a half dunams.

The design of the pool took into account the special and natural nature of the area.

Also, a console (hanging) promenade was designed that gives a feeling of buoyancy above the pool water, and boulders were placed on the bank to enrich the habitat.

In and around the pond there is a rich biodiversity of plants and animals as well as aquatic plants, such as the water lily and the common lizard.

In surveys conducted over the past few years, four endangered amphibian species have been found in the winter pond in Rihaniya: common salamander, common mole, striped newt and green toad.

You can already see a variety of waterfowl and hawks that frequent the pool.

There is now more awareness for maintaining winter pools

The Kinneret Drainage and Streams Authority points out that there is now more international awareness of the importance of preserving moist habitats and winter ponds, in order to maintain the ecological balance, since ponds and their surroundings are still damaged due to uncontrolled waste dumping or trampling of unique flora and fauna. Nature and that winter ponds, or winter puddles, have a unique ecosystem, formed from the catchments of surface runoff, or groundwater rising in a location where there are cavities in the ground.

Since winter ponds are temporary, the environmental conditions in them, such as water level, temperature, salinity, oxygen percentage and more, change drastically throughout the season, forcing the creatures and plants in the pond to adapt their life cycle to the ever-changing environment.

These facts make the winter ponds an ecological laboratory, which is a habitat that maintains a rich and unique biodiversity, while other animals like birds, reptiles and the like, come to the ponds to enjoy the abundance of water and food found in it.

The Kinneret Drainage and Streams Authority asks the public to come and enjoy free of charge the beauty of the temporary winter pool, which will disappear during the summer, but to maintain the integrity of the pool and the cleanliness of the water and the environment.

It is recommended to stock up on Circassian pastries at the Nalchik restaurant in the village and have a picnic on the benches in front of the winter pool.

How to get there:

On road 886 to the village of Rihaniya.

In the village turn with the road towards the west of the village.

Next to the newly established neighborhood, is the beautiful pool.
