Trick to Keep Lettuce Fresh (@tastegreatfoodie)

Almost all of us love the crunch of lettuce in our meals.

Salads, burgers and sandwiches are always tastier with fresh lettuce leaves in them.

The only problem is that lettuce always comes with a large amount of leaves and a half or even more of them are left unused, and eventually become fresh and unusable within a few days before we even think about using them again.

But no more - a successful food blogger has unveiled her amazing trick to keeping lettuce leaves fresh for over a month.

Lama Buzzy from Florida, who publishes her tips and recipes online under the name @TasteGreatFoodie, has revealed in Tiktok her trick that will keep your lettuce leaves "good and crispy" for weeks.

She showed that she puts the lettuce into a glass jar, before drowning the leaves in water and closing the lid.

Four weeks later she revealed the results and explained: "This is what the lettuce I showed you looks like - still fresh and crispy."

"You can put the lettuce in the fridge for a month now," she says, "the leaves will stay good and crispy. Just take it out of the fridge and dry it. Try it."

In an update she later released, she explained that she changed the water every day or two, and made sure the lid stayed closed and tight each time.

In a follow-up video she released a few weeks later, she said: "On January 10, I showed you how I soaked lettuce in water and told you it would last a month. It has now been much more than a month and here is the lettuce - still crispy."

At the beginning of the video, Lama places a paper towel over the opening of the jar.

She says it is not mandatory, but the paper towel helps absorb moisture.

"I would recommend adding a paper towel if you plan to leave the lettuce for about five days or more without changing the water."

Lama says that this way the lettuce can be stored for up to 14 days without changing the water, but she recommends changing the water every 1-3 days.

"It's true that no one wants or plans to store lettuce for a month," she said, "but it's a good idea if you go on vacation. Leave it like this for two weeks without changing the water - and go back to fresh lettuce."

The video went viral with more than 220,000 views and thousands of compliments.

She explained the success in a conversation with Bazafid and said: "Some people have pets that live on lettuce, others are just tired of throwing away old lettuce."

"Thank you! It's a great way to prevent food waste for people living alone," one commented, and another added, "I can stop tossing the leaf mix of my salad."

A third added: "I do this with carrots too, and I think they are more crispy after a month than when I bought them."

And there is also a scientific explanation

How does this miracle happen?

Dr. Heather Valerie-Lloyd, a dermatologist who publishes medical advice and medical and scientific advice on lifestyle, shared a video explaining why lettuce stays fresh in water, and the answer is osmosis (a process of fluid passing through a membrane or membrane (like a strainer - or in this case - lettuce).

"osmosis process allows water to enter into the cells of lettuce and cause the lettuce to remain stable and crispy," explained Dr. Woolery-Lloyd.

previously, we published another method that will help you keep fresh lettuce over time -

  • 1. Place the lettuce in a bowl with cold water for 5 minutes.

If it is very hot outside, throw in 2-3 ice cubes.

Soaking in cold water 'renews' and refreshes the leaves, and especially makes them crispier.

  • 2. Filter the water.

Separate the leaves, and rinse them well under cold water (in order to clean them from soil or pests).

  • 3. Dry the lettuce in a lettuce dryer, or alternatively gently shake the water and then dry with a towel.

  • 4. Place the lettuce in a bowl, and cover.

    Place in the refrigerator.

The location in the refrigerator is also an important point, since too low a temperature (similar to too high) will cause the leaves to wither.

The ideal location would be in most of the refrigerators on the middle shelf, and the lettuce would stay fresh for at least a week, sometimes even longer.
