It took a century and seventy decades for a woman to take the reins of the British press agency.

Alessandra Galloni has been appointed editor-in-chief of Reuters, which employs some 2,450 journalists around the world and has been a member of the Thomson Reuters group since 2008.

"It is an honor to lead the best editorial staff in the world, filled with talented, dedicated and inspiring journalists,"

she said on the occasion of her appointment.

The charismatic 47-year-old Italian, until then Reuters' global editorial director since 2015, will take up her post as editor-in-chief on April 19 in London.

Her appetite for the economy made her the favorite to succeed 65-year-old American Stephen J. Adler, who retired after ten years of loyal service.

Originally from Rome and quadrilingual, Alessandra Galloni is a graduate of Harvard University and the London School of Economics.
