Unknown attacked a 43-year-old in his car in Essen and seriously injured him.
As the police announced, the incident occurred on Monday evening in the southern part of Essen.
The man's 28-year-old passenger was also injured.
According to the investigators, eyewitnesses to the police had described how several masked people were supposed to have hit the 43-year-old's car with objects around 8:20 p.m.
Shots are also said to have been fired.
When the first patrol car arrived, the officials said the damaged vehicle came towards them.
It showed "enormous damage, various window panes were smashed."
Among other things, the police used a police helicopter to search for the alleged perpetrators who are said to have fled in a black Porsche Cayenne.
The car was finally tracked down on the A40 in the direction of Dortmund.
A 56-year-old inmate was provisionally arrested, police said he would be brought before a judge.
The search for the other suspects continues, the police initially did not provide any information about the possible backgrounds of the attack.
