Bodycam recordings by the US police: You can see a traffic control and the subsequent attempt to arrest the 20-year-old African American Daunte Wright.
While putting on the handcuffs, Wright suddenly tries to get out of the grip and gets back into the car - a policewoman comes to help, the situation escalates:
“Taser, taser, taser!
Oh, damn it - I shot him. "
The police later said that mistaking the stun gun for the service weapon was a fatal oversight.
Tim Gannon, Brooklyn Center Police Chief
“During the mess, the policewoman pulled her gun instead of the electric baton. From my point of view, the immediate desperate reaction also shows that this was an accidental shot that led to the tragic death of Mr. Wright. "
The incident occurred on Sunday just a few miles from the Minneapolis courthouse where the trial of ex-police officer Derek Chauvin for the killing of African American George Floyd is taking place.
Hundreds of people took to the streets on Monday after the fatal shot at Daunte Wright to demonstrate against police violence.
US President Joe Biden called on the citizens to calm down, the local police called on the National Guard for assistance.
According to the police, the incident is being thoroughly investigated and the officer was released during the ongoing investigation.
A night curfew has been ordered for the greater Minneapolis area.
Regardless, the protests continued.
