A traveler tried to ride on the step of an Intercity train in the direction of Frankfurt in Cologne Central Station.
A train employee noticed the man clinging to the outside of the train and initiated an emergency braking, said a spokeswoman for the federal police.
According to a police report, the incident occurred early Monday morning.
Accordingly, the man stated that he got out of the car during the 40-minute stop in Cologne to smoke a cigarette.
He missed the onward journey and jumped up without further ado when the doors could no longer be opened.
A railway employee observed him.
Nobody was injured in the subsequent emergency braking.
Criminal charges were filed against the man for dangerous interference with rail traffic.
