If you are constantly struggling with poor performance, the dentist can help you in some cases.

You can find out exactly how here.

When the body is healthy, the immune system usually copes well with harmless pathogens such as the common cold virus.

But a number of factors weaken our defenses, such as an unbalanced diet, little exercise or too little sleep.

But there can also be less obvious causes if we feel tired and weak - for example, dental problems

.

These can even lead to extreme back problems, as sports dentist Dr.

Siegfried Marquardt explains.

“Even a normal inflammation of the gums weakens the body.

It gets worse when the bacteria spread to the tooth * and jawbone.

Then we speak of periodontal disease.

It ensures

that our immune response as well as the general performance decrease rapidly

”, quotes the portal Fitbook with the DAK-Krankenkasse as a partner dentist Marquardt, who, among other things, looks after the German SkiCross national team and the German Ski Association as a team dentist.

Inflammation of the gums can affect the entire organism - and make it more susceptible to disease

The problem is the bacteria in the mouth, which can trigger gum inflammation.

The more they multiply, the more our organism is concerned with combating them.

This can not only have a negative effect on endurance when exercising, but also increase the susceptibility to illnesses such as colds

.

One can prevent this by not neglecting the daily teeth cleaning, attending a check-up at the dentist at least once a year and regularly using professional teeth cleaning.

Misaligned teeth are responsible for up to 60 percent of back pain

But oral health not only has an enormous influence on susceptibility to infection: In many cases, back pain is also said to be due to problems in the oral cavity.

According to fitbook.de, Marquardt estimates that 50 to 60 percent of all back complaints are caused (at least partly) by misaligned teeth.

"If the teeth do not work together evenly, that is, if not all teeth touch each other at the same time when you clench, then the jaw muscles have to compensate for this suboptimal interaction," says Marquardt.

This can result in muscles cramping in various places in the musculoskeletal system, leading to neck, back or even hip pain

.

“The dentist recognizes such misalignments.

Ask whether a functional analysis and therapy can be carried out in your practice.

With analyzes, tests and dental impressions, the expert recognizes - mostly in cooperation with a physiotherapist or orthopedic surgeon - where adjustments need to be made, ”says sports dentist Marquardt.

A splint that is worn at night

and corrects the incorrect load when biting is an easy way to alleviate the discomfort.
