Since January 1, 2020, trainees in Germany have been receiving a minimum wage.

We show how high the minimum salary of apprentices will be in 2021 and who is entitled to it.

How much trainees earn in Germany is determined by employers * and trade unions.

In the past, there was no lower wage limit for apprentices.

But that has changed with the new Vocational Training Act (BBiG), which

introduced

a

minimum wage for trainees

.

Minimum wage in training - salary table:

Employers who are

not

subject to a

collective agreement

have been obliged to pay their trainees a minimum wage since January 1, 2020.

The amount is stipulated by law for the first year of apprenticeship and increases by a certain percentage in the following years.

The actual minimum wage for apprentices depends on the year in which the apprenticeship starts:

Start of training

Minimum remuneration per month (gross) in the 1st year of apprenticeship

2020

515 euros

2021

550 euros

2022

585 euros

2023

620 euros

From 2024 there should be a formula based on which the minimum wage in training is based.

The exact value is then published by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in the Federal Law Gazette.

However, it must be noted that the

wage agreement

always

takes precedence in

terms of training remuneration, even if this means that the remuneration is then lower than provided for in the minimum wage for apprentices.

After the first year of the apprenticeship, the minimum wage increases by a

statutory percentage

.

The salary of trainees increases by 18 percent in the second year of apprenticeship, by 35 percent in the third year of apprenticeship and by 40 percent in the fourth year of apprenticeship (if provided).

Career starters who start their training in 2021 expect at least the following remuneration:

Training start in 2021

Minimum remuneration per month (gross)

1st year of apprenticeship

550 euros

2nd year of apprenticeship

649 euros (18 percent more than in the 1st year of apprenticeship)

3rd year of apprenticeship

742.50 euros (35 percent more than in the 1st year of training)

4th year of apprenticeship

770 euros (40 percent more than in the 1st year of training)

Older trainees miss out on the minimum wage

The minimum wage for apprentices is a good thing, but many apprentices get nothing.

The minimum remuneration only applies to those who started their training from 2020.

The law

does not apply to apprenticeships that have already been concluded

.

The good news: Those who have completed their training are entitled to the statutory minimum wage, which is likely to be higher than the minimum wage for trainees.
