He made social division and classicism visible in the British city of Blackburn: the English documentary filmmaker Craig Easton has been named Photographer of the Year by the Sony World Photography Award.
He won with his series "Bank Top" on social disadvantage and clichés about population groups.
In the city of Blackburn, the social differences and the separation of different parts of the population are particularly serious.
In school classes, up to 90 percent are children from Islamic families.
Photographer Easton accompanied the residents of Blackburn and produced haunting black and white portraits on topics such as social disadvantage, housing, unemployment, immigration and participation.
"It's a privilege to be able to do that and to question perceptions and stereotypes," said Easton, who also lives in the north of England.
The Sony World Photography Award is considered the largest photography competition in the world.
In the professional field, photographers compete with image series, in open competition amateurs compete with individual images.
The winner of the amateurs also dealt with stereotypes.
The portrait "African Victorian" by photographer Tamary Kudita shows a young black woman in Victorian clothing holding traditional Shona cooking utensils in her hand.
