(ANSA) - MILAN, APRIL 15 - The prosecutors of Milan Maura Ripamonti and Leonardo Lesti reiterated in a preliminary hearing the request for trial against 9 people, including MaurizioGentile, former CEO of the Italian railway network and current extraordinary commissioner for the safety of the A24 and A25, in the proceedings on the railway disaster of 25 January 2018 in Pioltello, in the Milanese area, in which, following the bundling of the Cremona-Milano Porta Garibaldi regional road, three people died and several dozen were injured.

The request was made before the Milan magistrate AnnaMagelli.

Among the 9 defendants, for culpable railway disaster, multiple manslaughter, negligent injury and violation of safety regulations, there are two managers at the time of ReteFerroviaria Italiana, including Gentile, seven traffickers and technicians of RFI and the same company.

A tenth defendant, on the other hand, Ernesto Salvatore, at the time in charge of the Treviglio Works Maintenance Unit of Rete FerrovariaItaliana Spa, asked to negotiate three and a half years in prison with the favorable opinion of the prosecutors.

For the Prosecutor's Office, that of Pioltello was a railway disaster caused by a long series of "omissions" in "maintenance" and "safety", implemented only to save money.

The maxi report of the prosecutors' consultants had already established that the accident was caused by the "piece of rail" of 23 centimeters which fractured in the so-called 'zero point' due to "irreversible cyclical damage generated by conditions of insufficient maintenance".

Now the defenses are talking and the preliminary hearing will be adjourned to another date.
