(ANSA) - BERLIN, APRIL 18 - Germany gathers today in a moment of national commemoration for the 80,000 coronavirus victims. Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will attend a mass at the Kaiser Wilhelm church in Berlin, which was completely destroyed during the 1943 bombings, the remains of which have been incorporated into an anti-war memorial. Then they will attend a ceremony at the capital's Konzerthaus, where the president will give a speech. With the measures against Covid still in force that limit gatherings, the ceremonies will be broadcast live on public television. "As president, I believe it is very important for us to stop and say goodbye with dignity to those who died during the pandemic, including those who were not victims of the virus but died alone because of it ", Steinmeier said, announcing the national mass." Behind each number, there is a life ", said the president again. The leaders of the 16 regional Laender have urged citizens to join in the remembrance by lighting candles in the windows all weekend.
