The transport sector in Italy is in line with the EU average and is responsible for 1/4 of greenhouse gas emissions;

in particular, 92.6% of emissions are produced by road transport.

This was stated by Antonella Bernetti of Ispra (Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) as part of the "Focus on road transport" in relation to the streaming event on the "Trend of atmospheric emissions and emission scenarios in Italy".

Greenhouse gases come from 69% from cars, 25% from freight traffic, 3% from buses and the same from two-wheelers, especially motorcycles.

Road transport, it was explained, shows an increase in greenhouse gas emissions of 3.9% compared to 1990 and represents 23.4% of the total national emissions of CO2 equivalent. In 2019, taken as a reference, the preponderant weight is still fossil fuels: in particular, the consumption of diesel and petrol accounts for about 88% of total consumption on the road. In 2019, road transport is the main source of nitrogen oxide emissions, with 40.3% of the total emitted at national level, despite having recorded a reduction of 74.6% since 1990. The emissions of fine particulate matter deriving from road transport from 1990 to 2019 fell by 73.5%, representing 10.1% of the total emitted at national level in 2019. With regard to carbon monoxide, emissions have been reduced by 92.1% since 1990,representing 18.7% of the total issued nationally in 2019.

In terms of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, road transport emissions from 2019 to 2030 decreased by 39% from about 97 to 59 million tons, with a further decrease in 2050 reaching -70%, until reaching 22 million tons. This is what emerged during the Focus on Road Transport that Ispra presented today during the presentation of the Report on the state and national scenarios of emissions. As for emissions, "we also expect for fuel consumption, from 2019 to 2050, a decrease of about 60% with a sharp decline in the contribution of diesel which passes from 2019 to 2050 from about 60% to 8 % of the total, while there is an increasing use of methane and alternative fuels ", it was explained.
