A new report from the Argentine Society of Intensive Care (SATI) warned that
the occupation of intensive care beds
in the AMBA is growing, with a higher incidence of coronavirus cases.
He also warned for severe cases of covid-19 in
young patients
.
The entity conducted a study on Friday 16 on a sample of 163 intensive care units (ICUs) nationwide, of which 65 are in the city and the suburbs (51% public and 49% private).
Of the 1,350 beds surveyed in the AMBA,
95%
were occupied.
The
64%
were patients with coronavirus, of which
81%
required mechanical ventilation (ARM) and 50% was in the
prone position (i.e. face down to facilitate treated respiratory function).
They warn about the high occupancy of intensive care beds in the AMBA.
This shows an increase compared to the last study released by SATI - carried out on April 10 on 1,046 beds - when the occupation in the metropolitan area was
92%
and those infected with covid-19 represented
57%
.
These figures contrast with those usually published by the Ministry of Health of the Nation.
According to the last part, the occupancy in the AMBA is
74.3%
.
However, from SATI they clarified that it is a partial and voluntary sample, "so it is not prudent to draw conclusions above the official statistics."
At the national level, according to the report, 3,332 beds were surveyed.
"An occupancy rate of 90% was observed, 48% occupied with covid-19 patients of which 78% required MRA and 50% required PP."
The expansion capacity is 15% in the AMBA and 18% nationwide, which means that the beds for coronavirus patients can still be expanded.
In the conclusions of the study, SATI highlights that "a high occupancy of beds was observed, predominantly young seriously ill patients with covid-19, with a high requirement for MRA and PP."
He also warned that there is an overload in the health sector, if the relationship between the number of staff and patients is taken into account.
"Both the work overload and the deficit of some of the essential supplies could impact the quality of care for these critically ill patients," they stated.
