Fruit flies: where they come from and why they suddenly become so many
The fruit flies, also known as vinegar flies, have quickly found their way into the home kitchen. Whether it is fruit from the garden or from the supermarket, the females have usually already laid their eggs by the time the fruit reaches the kitchen. Just one day after they were mated, they lay
up to 400 eggs
. These pupate within a few days until they finally hatch. This can then take up to eleven days. And already the kitchen seems to be plagued by a fruit fly invasion. Another reason the vinegar fly finds its way into the kitchen is because of its sense of smell. Especially in the
morning hours or late in the evening they
go looking for food. And then it's time to follow your nose, even over long distances.
