A serious accident occurred in Mülheim an der Ruhr on Tuesday afternoon.
As the police announced, an 86-year-old drove into two passers-by in a supermarket parking lot.
One woman died and another man, 47, was seriously injured.
The identity of the dead has not yet been conclusively clarified, it said.
According to the police, the senior wanted to pick up his wife at the mall.
After the 84-year-old got into the car, the vehicle suddenly accelerated.
The car caught the two passers-by and only stopped at a wall.
A woman had to be rescued from under the vehicle by the fire brigade.
She died a little later in a clinic.
The second victim was seriously injured in the impact with the car.
The driver and his wife and witnesses were in shock and had to be treated as well.
The traffic accident team at the Essen police headquarters has taken over the investigation.
