A senior educator in the UK has presented four math exercises to primary school pupils that adults seemingly have difficulty solving.

In the first you will be asked to solve a simple equation, in the second to identify how many triangles are hidden in the picture, in the third to find the numerical value of the fruit and in the fourth to find how many catfish are in the aquarium.

Although the exercises are at the primary school level, they are more complicated than meets the eye.

How much will you be able to answer correctly?

The questions were collected by Chris Hogbin, a senior educator at Math Solutions Software Solutions, 3P Learning, from New South Wales.

Examine yourselves.

the solution:

While some would say that the correct answer is 72 - this is a mistake.

Neither 16 nor 17 are correct answers.

The correct answer is 65.

2. How many triangles do you see in the picture?

The following mathematical problem presents an image of a triangle bisected by lines.

You must identify how many triangles appear in the image in total.

(Photo: Screenshot, 3P Learning)

the solution:

There are more than four triangles here and also more than six.

Have you reached 16?

You went too far.

The correct answer is 12.

The only way to create triangles in the figure is when the top angle is part of the triangle.

The base of the triangle will have to be one of the two parallel lines in the image (middle and bottom), each of which allows for six different bases.

there it is:

3. What is the numerical value of the fruit?

The next question involves four simple equations where the numbers are represented by different fruits whose numerical values are hidden.

The answers to the first three equations were given in advance, allowing you to work backwards to reveal the numerical value of each fruit: apples, bananas and cherries.

Solve the fourth equation:

(Photo: Screenshot, 3P Learning)

the solution:

The correct answer is 30. Each apple is equal to 20, each banana is equal to 9 and a pair of cherries is equal to 2 (i.e. one cherry is equal to 1).

4. How many catfish are in the aquarium?

The aquarium has 198 body fish, halibut and catfish.

There are 4 times more body fish than glowworms.

There are 6 more rays than catfish.

How many pans are in the aquarium?

(Photo: Giphy)

the solution:

The correct answer is 28.

How did we get there?

We will mark the body fish with the letter g, the radishes with the letter a and the catfish with the letter c.

In total we have 198 fish. We will put the data in the equation:

g + a + c = 198

If there are 4 times more fish in the bodies of zebrafish, we can determine that:

g = 4a

If there are 6 more zebrafish than catfish, we can determine that:

c = a -6

We will now replace the g and c in the original equation with what we found:

4a + a + a - 6 = 198 We

add and find that:

6a = 204

that is:

a = 34

if we have 34 radiations and we know that the number of catfish is smaller than the number of radiations -6, we get the result 28.

How many problems did you manage to solve correctly?

  • Only one

  • two

  • three

  • I solved everything.
