When you store food properly, you avoid waste.
Read here what you need to consider with regard to fruit and vegetables.
Food waste can easily
be avoided with
proper storage
.
This will keep your fruit and vegetables * fresh and crisp longer until you want to process them.
Unfortunately, many do not even know how to best store certain types of fruit and vegetables, which makes them go bad faster.
Ethylene: These fruits and vegetables should not be stored next to other fruits
Apples, pears, nectarines and plums, but also tomatoes and avocados emit
ethylene
- a ripening gas that makes other fruits and vegetables ripen faster.
Kiwis, broccoli, cabbage and mangoes are particularly sensitive.
Therefore, these varieties
should not be stored next to each other
.
Even if they are a nice sight in the fruit bowl: it is better to store the ethylene-secreting fruit types isolated, for example in plastic bags.
Apples, for example, are best kept in the refrigerator or in the basement, where it is cool and dark.

Beware of mistakes: You should really only buy this fruit when it is ripe.
Do not store these fruits and vegetables together
In general, fruits and vegetables should be stored separately. Because vegetables cannot ripen - apart from tomatoes. Instead, it becomes putrid and tainted. Fruit, on the other hand, often ripens and makes surrounding vegetables go bad faster. Although bananas themselves do not emit ethylene, you should still not store them next to lettuce and cucumbers as they wilt them faster. Bananas are often artificially sprayed with ripening gases. So:
store bananas away from lettuce
! They like it light and warm. And did you know that they have an even longer shelf life when hung?
When storing food, you should also be careful what you keep with onions and leeks.
Both pass on their
onion aroma
quickly.
Cauliflower, for example, is very susceptible to absorbing other flavors.

Storing fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator: dos and don'ts
Important: You should
store
fruit and vegetables
separately
in the refrigerator, namely in the two containers underneath the glass plate.
Only in this
cold zone
do the varieties retain their aroma.
But what can be kept in the refrigerator and what doesn't belong there at all?
For example, fruit from southern countries should never be kept in the refrigerator.
