Recall: Residues in muesli can be carcinogenic

Sesame, mainly from India, often contains ethylene oxide, which is banned in the EU.

In recent weeks, food controls have repeatedly found residues of the active ingredient ethylene oxide in products such as bars, snacks and salad toppings.

The EU legislator has set a so-called maximum residue level of 0.05 mg / kg for ethylene oxide in sesame.

Because ethylene oxide is mutagenic and carcinogenic.

Short-term symptoms in humans include headache, dizziness, and nausea.

In worse cases, the active ingredient can cause twitching and cramps up to a comatose state.

Stiftung Warentest therefore took a close look at sesame products at the beginning of the year.
