Almost four years after a terrorist attack in New York, a court found the attacker guilty: A 31-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The judge called the act "barbaric and hideous".
In December 2017, the perpetrator detonated an explosive device in a pedestrian tunnel that connects a bus station with Times Square.
According to the New York Times, the self-made bomb did not explode completely, but the attacker was seriously injured and four passers-by were slightly injured.
The authorities in New York shortly thereafter classified the explosion as a terrorist attack.
The public prosecutor accused the man of having acted on behalf of the terrorist militia "IS".
He was angry at the Middle East policy of then President Donald Trump and radicalized on the Internet - but acted as a "lone wolf".
The defendant himself asserted that he did not want to hurt anyone.
He rejected any proximity to the "IS".
His lawyer blamed the crime on a "personal crisis that made him isolated, depressed, vulnerable and suicidal."
