Joe Biden has decided to recognize the killing of 1.5 million Armenians during the period of the First World War by the Ottoman Empire as genocide.
The New York Times writes it, specifying that the announcement is expected for Saturday, the 106th anniversary of the mass murder.
It will be the first US president to do so, after at least thirty countries have taken similar steps.
The move is destined to inflame tensions with Turkey, a NATO ally, but Biden has put his commitment to human rights first.
"Turkey will continue to defend the truth against the lies about the so-called 'Armenian genocide' and against those who are supporting this slander on the basis of political calculations." Thus Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a statement at the end of a meeting with his advisers, in view of the expected recognition of the massacre of the First World War as a "genocide" by Joe Biden.
