The Corona emergency brake also applies to discounters and supermarkets.

The following is changing.

Munich - On Wednesday (April 21) the Bundestag approved a nationwide Corona emergency brake.

Since the Federal Council and Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also approved the legislative initiative, the existing Infection Protection Act will be expanded to include a legally fixed corona emergency brake.

For the time being, up to and including July 30, Merkel's Emergency Brakes Act is to give the Federal Republic a uniform framework.

The Corona emergency brake applies regionally if the 7-day incidence is over 100 for three days in a row.

The emergency brake then applies from the day after the next.

Closure of shops as well as cultural and leisure facilities will then be the result - and there will also be changes for the food retail sector.

While most stores have to close when the incidence is over 100, grocery and drug stores are still exempt.

Which shops are still allowed to open despite the Corona emergency brake?

  • Grocer

  • Beverage markets

  • Drugstores

  • Bookstores

  • Flower shops

  • Garden centers

  • Pharmacies

  • Health food stores

  • Baby stores

  • Medical supply stores

  • optician

  • Hearing care professional

  • Gas stations

  • Places of newspaper sales

  • Feed markets

Corona emergency brake limits the number of customers allowed

The sale of goods that go beyond the usual range of the respective shop is prohibited.

In the shops that are allowed to stay open despite the emergency brake, the number of customers will be more limited.

With a sales area of up to 800 square meters, one customer is allowed per 20 square meters of sales area.

Up to now, 10 square meters per customer was enough.

If the total sales area of a shop is more than 800 square meters, there is a limit of one customer per 40 square meters of sales area.

It is important that the minimum distance of 1.5 meters between customers can be guaranteed.

Since the usual Aldi or Lidl branches are around 1,200 square meters in size, the discounters can accommodate around 50 people in total.

Mask requirement and corona regulations for to-go sales

In order to be able to comply with the customer limit, supermarkets can switch on so-called customer traffic lights again or introduce compulsory shopping carts.

Furthermore, a mask requirement applies both in the shops and in the parking lots.

The serving and delivery of food and beverages is still permitted.

However, quick snacks are still not allowed to be consumed directly on site or in the vicinity of the sales stand.

In addition, from 10 p.m. when the curfew begins, only home delivery of food and drinks is possible - to-go sales are not permitted during the curfew.

Bavaria wants to take a special route with the corona emergency brake.
