A man attacked and fatally injured a policewoman at a station near Paris with a knife.
This was announced by the public prosecutor of Versailles.
The television station BFM TV and the radio station Europe 1 reported that the woman had died from her injuries.
The attacker was shot and arrested, it said.
Then he died.
The anti-terror prosecutor examined the incident, but has not yet taken over the investigation, it said when asked.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed on Twitter a knife attack in the municipality of Rambouillet a good 60 kilometers from Paris.
The politician is allegedly on the way to the crime scene.
The background to the crime was initially unclear.
The newspaper "Le Parisien" reported that the woman had just returned from lunch when she was attacked.
She died on the spot.
