  • The catering and hotel industry is one of the industries hardest hit by the pandemic.

Federal emergency brake from 7-day incidence over 100: This applies to the catering trade

Update from April 23rd:

The Bundestag passed the new Infection Protection Act on Wednesday, April 21st. The Federal Council let it happen on Thursday. The

Corona emergency brake

will come into force this Friday, in districts and cities with a seven-day incidence of over 100 in the past three days, the federal emergency brake should automatically apply from Saturday, as the Federal Ministry of the Interior in Berlin explained according to dpa. This means: As soon as more than 100 new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants are registered within seven days (7-day incidence) in a district or an independent city, stricter measures should apply from the day after the next. Until the incidence falls below the 100 threshold again for five consecutive days.

For the

catering

industry, this means with a higher incidence:

restaurants and canteens must remain closed

.

However, there are exceptions, for example, for dining rooms in rehabilitation centers or nursing homes, for the care of the homeless or for long-distance drivers.

The pick-up and delivery of food and beverages are also allowed.

Planned Easter rest is overturned

Update from March 24th:

The

planned Easter rest days from April 1st to 5th

(see update from March 23rd) will be stopped. Chancellor Angela Merkel said this in a press statement. According to the dpa news agency, Merkel had previously communicated this to the prime ministers of the federal states in a switch that was convened at short notice. Merkel explained that the costs and benefits of such a regulation were not in a reasonable proportion. The Chancellor took “full responsibility” for this mistake. According to the resolutions of the Bund-Länder-Round of March 22nd, it was actually intended that Thursday and Saturday

rest days similar to Sundays or public holidays

should be.

On Maundy Thursday all economic life should be able to rest, on Holy Saturday only the food trade in the narrower sense should be able to open.

Lockdown extended until April 18th - strict lockdown over Easter?

Update from March 23rd:

The lockdown, which has been going on for months, will be extended until April 18th.

In view of the further increase in the number of corona infections, the federal and state governments are also sending Germany into the

sharpest lockdown since the pandemic

began a year ago, as reported by the German Press Agency (dpa).

From April 1st to 5th inclusive, i.e. from Maundy Thursday to Easter Monday, public, economic and private life is to be largely shut down in order to break the third wave of the pandemic.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the prime ministers of the federal states decided on Tuesday night.

Where

outside catering

is

already

open, it has to

be closed again

for these five days

.

The next deliberations of the federal and state governments will take place on April 12th.

Lockdown extended until March 28th

Update from March 4th:

The lockdown in Germany is

basically extended until March 28th

. The federal and state governments agreed on this on Wednesday, March 3rd. While easing for the retail trade and with regard to the contact rules is already possible from March 8th, restaurants and other dining establishments must wait at least until March 22nd. Then, depending on the seven-day incidence, further easing should follow, for example in the areas of outdoor dining, sport and culture, as

reported by

the

Tagesschau

,

among others

. In addition, the Prime Minister and Chancellor Angela Merkel want to

discuss areas such as gastronomy

and travel

again on March 22nd

.

Gastronomy and hotels made 36.6 percent less sales in 2020

Update from February 22nd:

As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, sales in hotels, restaurants, pubs and canteens in 2020 fell by 36.6 percent compared to the previous year.

It is a

record slump in sales in the German hospitality industry

after sales had risen in the previous ten years.

Without taking price increases into account, the hospitality industry did 39 percent less business.

According to the industry association Dehoga, the sales losses in the Corona months amount to almost 40 billion euros.

Bars and restaurants suffered particularly from the closings and restrictions in the lockdown months.

"After a year of pandemic with almost four months of lockdown and far-reaching travel and contact restrictions, the need in the industry is huge," said Dehoga President Guido Zöllick, according to the

Tagesschau

.

It is now important to have concrete perspectives as to when the industry will be allowed to reopen its companies.

Lockdown extended until March 7th

Update from February 11th:

On Wednesday Angela Merkel and the Prime Ministers decided to extend the lockdown in Germany until March 7th. This means that retail and gastronomy will remain closed. The next steps will be discussed on March 3rd. For the first time, specific opening steps were linked to an incidence value: If there are less than 35 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within 7 days, retailers, museums and galleries as well as businesses with body-related services should be able to reopen, as BR reports online on the new resolutions.

The Bavarian catering industry

is disappointed, as it continues to say according to BR, and is demanding that the opening perspective with a stable incidence of 35 should also apply to restaurants, cafes and hotels.

Currently, the federal states should only discuss opening scenarios for gastronomy, recreational sports and culture when the incidence value of 35 has been reached.

Extended VAT reduction for gastronomy

Update from February 4th:

As the German Press Agency (dpa) reports, a reduced VAT rate of seven percent is to apply to meals in restaurants and cafés by the end of 2022.

According to the dpa, the leaders of the Union and SPD decided on Wednesday (03.02.21) that the exemption, which was initially limited to June 30th, would be extended due to the corona crisis.

Update from January 20, 2021:

. Schools, daycare centers, leisure facilities, restaurants and hotels must remain closed. The new measures include the obligation

to wear

medical masks

(OP, KN95 / N95 or FFP2 masks)

in shops and in public transport

- in Bavaria, an FFP2 mask has been mandatory for these areas since January 18. In addition, the federal government is increasing the

maximum

monthly support amounts for

bridging

aid

III for companies for

corona aid for companies

and simplifying the entry requirements. According to the

Tagesschau

should start paying out in March.

hospitality industry

is expected to have

38 percent less income

Corona summit: Lockdown will be extended until January 31, measures tightened

Update from January 7th, 2021:

Since the number of corona cases in Germany is currently still too high (the 7-day incidence is well above the limit of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week), the

lockdown will last

until January 31st Extended in 2021.

This also means that

restaurants, bars, cafes and hotels

must remain

closed

.

Many restaurateurs, whose businesses had to close since the beginning of November, continue to offer food to be picked up or deliver it themselves.

Lockdown in Germany is to continue until January 10th

Update from December 3rd, 2020:

According to a decision by the federal and state governments, the

partial lockdown in Germany is to continue until January 10th

. As a minimum, restaurants, museums, theaters and leisure facilities must remain closed. The reason for this is the still far too

high number of new corona infections and deaths

: The German health authorities had recently reported 487 coronavirus-related deaths to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within 24 hours.

On January 4th, the federal and state governments want to discuss how to proceed - depending on the pandemic situation.

Bavaria's Prime Minister Söder

indicated that there could then be a further tightening of the measures, as the German Press Agency (dpa) reported. "The question is whether we can keep the country in this kind of half-sleep the whole time or whether we don't have to think about going deeper in some places very clearly and consistently," said the CSU chairman, according to dpa. His feeling is that "we shouldn't be afraid to be very consistent in the end - and maybe even shorter, more consistent than longer, semi-consistent".

Update from November 26, 2020:

On Wednesday,

November

25,

2020

, Angela Merkel and the prime ministers of the federal states agreed on new regulations for the period up to January. The new decisions will primarily affect the catering and retail sectors.

The partial lockdown will be extended nationwide at

least until December

20th

. Restaurants, cafes and the like will probably have to

remain closed until the beginning of January

. Whether there will be special regulations for Christmas and New Year's Eve has not yet been determined: The federal and state governments want to carry out "another review" before Christmas, according to the decision paper dated November 25th. The federal and state governments want to meet again by December 15. The federal government is planning

financial aid for affected companies based

on the previous November aid.

Update from November 24, 2020:

Since November 2, catering establishments such as restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs have had to close again due to corona. Since then, only the delivery and collection of food has been allowed. On

, the federal and state governments will discuss

how things will go from December onwards

. First insights into the draft resolution for the Corona summit point to an

extension of the partial lockdown for the catering

and hotel industry until at least December

20

. That would be a tough cut for the industry: the winter and Christmas business is usually a strong source of revenue. Christmas parties and Christmas dinners could not take place with an extended lockdown.

Meanwhile, industry representatives are demanding further

financial aid from the state

.

“The November aid must become winter aid,” said Ingrid Hartges, General Manager of the Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga), to the Rheinische Post.

From March to the end of November, the

loss in sales for the industry

amounted to 32 billion euros.

Update from October 29, 2020:

From

mid-March to the end of May

, restaurants and eateries were closed or could only stay afloat with delivery service and the option to pick up the food. The protective measures against the corona virus have

hit

the

hospitality industry

hard

in Germany

. After the factories were able to reopen for a few months in the summer, there is now another partial lockdown. On Wednesday (October 28th, 2020) the federal and state governments decided on renewed restrictions on public life in order to

curb

the

spread of the corona virus

. The following applies to gastronomy: From

November 2nd until the end of the month

must close all catering establishments such as restaurants, bars and pubs.

The

delivery and collection

of food

is still

permitted.

Canteens can remain open.

Gastronomy in times of Corona: service staff report about a new day-to-day work

Original message from September 30, 2020:

According to Wirtschaftswoche, the crisis is

particularly

evident

with regard to

sales

.

In March 2020, total industry revenue plummeted by more than 44 percent compared to the previous month.

In April sales collapsed again by 55 percent compared to March.

Since then, things have slowly been on the up again, the

easing of the corona protective measures

is also reflected in the increasing total sales.

But the

pre-crisis level

has not yet been reached, according to Wirtschaftswoche.

Gastronomy with Corona requirements: How has everyday work as a service staff changed?

The

slump in sales also had serious consequences

for

employees in the hospitality industry

.

Some companies had to file for bankruptcy.

Many employees lost their jobs or were sent on short-time work.

For around four months now, restaurants and cafés have been able to receive guests again.

As can be seen from a press release for the resmio reservation system, the work for the

430,000 employees in the German catering service has

changed

forever

.

Five service staff from five restaurants in different cities were asked: “How did the employees on the front line experience the new start?

How has your everyday life in the restaurant changed as a result of Corona? "

Also interesting:

Up to 92 percent: These foods have become much more expensive during the Corona crisis.

Everyday gastronomy in times of Corona: New tasks, but the fun falls by the wayside

Since March, many companies have been able to post income at least with delivery services, which had to be organized spontaneously in many places during the lockdown.

For the most part, these were well received by customers.

Most of the service staff are also happy

to be able to

entertain guests on site

again in the meantime

.

The new tasks in everyday corona include the continuous

disinfection of

the menu cards and tables as well as the

recording of contact details

.

Many interpersonal little things have to fall by the wayside: "I often sat down at the table when a larger group wanted to pay separately again and offered them a schnapps or espresso," says a waitress from Fürth.

That wouldn't be possible now.

Corona protective measures in restaurants and cafes: How do the guests react?

Many guests had great

understanding for the current situation

and felt the hygiene measures

in good hands, reports a waitress from Potsdam according to resmio.

The

changed behavior of visitors

sees a bartender from Nuremberg critical.

He reports: "When the alcohol flows, we have also had the experience of encountering

incomprehension

when we have pointed out the observance of the known rules and enforced them." He also noticed that the limited contact with the guests was partially

perceived

as

impersonal service

.

That also has a negative effect on tips

out.

On the whole, however, all respondents from the service industry are currently happier than at the time of the shutdown.

The most important thing is still a “smile on your face.

Because you can see that under the mask. "
