What causes the eye to jump suddenly?
Spasm of the eyelids, sometimes referred to as laparoscopy, is a well-known phenomenon known to most people.
This is a condition in which, without warning, an involuntary, usually rapid, contraction of the muscles around the eyes appears.
Most often, it occurs in one eye, and is more common on the lower side compared to the upper eyelid.

The phenomenon is common and is often considered a benign condition that passes on its own without any medication.
Although the direct cause of the phenomenon is unknown, "jumping eye" events have been linked to high levels of stress, anxiety, fatigue and excessive alcohol consumption.
Smoking has also been linked as a risk factor as well as an external irritation of the eye.
Does it happen to everyone?
No.
Although this is a common phenomenon it is not in the public domain, and some researchers claim that there is a genetic predisposition to the phenomenon.
How long should it take?
A popping eye passes by itself within minutes to hours from the moment it appears in the vast majority of cases.
However, there are rare situations where the phenomenon becomes prolonged and bothersome and may last for weeks and even months.
Since extreme prolongation of the phenomenon can interfere and adversely affect the quality of life, in such situations local Botox injection may be considered as treatment.
If it lasts for weeks - you should consult a doctor.

Is there anything that can be done to make it go faster?
Rest can help, and there are few reports of the effectiveness of supplements such as calcium, folic acid, magnesium and various vitamins that have reduced the frequency of events.
Despite this, no clinical studies have been performed that have evaluated the efficacy of these treatments on a jumping eye.
Could this be a sign of a worrying medical condition?
Only in rare cases is a poplar eye an expression of a chronic disease.
Examples include Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Tourette's syndrome or as a manifestation of dystonia, a neurological condition characterized by strong and prolonged contractions of various muscles, in a particular area or in several areas of the body.
Therefore, in situations where a popping eye becomes a phenomenon that lasts for weeks, it is recommended to consult the attending physician.
