(ANSA) - ROME, APRIL 26 - Anger in India after the government requested and obtained the removal from Twitter of the most critical posts regarding the management of the coronavirus crisis.
Loriporta the BBC to which a spokesperson for the social network confirmed the decision to block some content after receiving a "valid request in accordance with the law".
India has been struggling in recent weeks with a surge in Covid, over 300,000 for five days in a row, and with an oxygen emergency in many hospitals.
According to Lumen, a database that collects rulings on online content around the world, the New Delhi government has issued an emergency order to censor some tweets. Twitter did not specify what content was removed, but according to local media, one of these is a tweet from a West Bengal politician who accuses Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being directly for the coronavirus victims. An official from the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology told The Hindu newspaper that it was "necessary to take action against those who are abusing social media ... for unethical purposes". But indignation broke out on social media with many criticizing the Indian government for focusing on "censorship"while the country finds itself in the midst of a "humanitarian disaster". (HANDLE).
