What is expected at the end of the plague?

Although the corona plague is on the decline in some parts of the world, scientists are worried about how it will affect our psyche when it is truly over.

According to researchers, the anxiety created by the Korna virus can cause some people to develop compulsive hygiene habits, which may prevent them from reintegrating into society.

The term "covid anxiety syndrome" was first coined by researchers last year, when Anna Nikiewicz of Kingston University and Markantonio Spade of the University of London South Bank noticed that people developed certain traits in response to corona.

Anxiety syndrome is characterized by a compulsive examination of corona symptoms, avoidance of public places, obsessive cleansing, and a pattern of “maladaptive behaviors” adopted with the onset of the plague.

Researchers now make it clear that the obsessive worry and avoidance of "threats," including avoiding public transportation or cleaning the house for hours, will not easily subside, even when we gain full control of the corona plague.

"Fear is normal. You and I are supposed to be afraid of the virus because it is dangerous. However the difference in terms of developing a psychopathological response is whether you end up behaving in too safe ways that put you in and lock you in fear," Spade said. "Re-involvement in society, and they will take care of it for many months, whether they are vaccinated or not."

The researchers used data from about 500 U.S. participants who reported their anxiety levels in June 2020. They found that the syndrome predicted general anxiety levels and depression, beyond factors such as personality traits and general health anxiety. Now, those researchers collected preliminary data from about self-report questionnaires. 300 adults in the UK in February 2021. These data suggest that corona anxiety syndrome was a single and independent predictor of anxiety and depression during the epidemic.

"I do not think we still know how big this syndrome is ... we will only start to find out when the restrictions are lifted," she said. Dr Victoria Salem, an endocrinologist and senior clinical research fellow at Imperial College London, who is working on a separate study with Spade, "I think corona syndrome will not be a huge problem, but it will affect a significant minority and we need to keep that in mind."
